Walgreens: 8/21/2011 - 8/27/2011

I'm a little peeved today because I did not get a Walgreens flier in my paper! Nor did I get one from CVS. It reminds me to mention to you guys that if this ever happens to you, you can always pick one up in the store. But waiting to get to the store does not help if you want to look at it ahead of your shopping trip. So, you always look up the flier online at the Walgreens and CVS websites.

I am going to implement a new system with slightly different listing style and some color coding to help with the fluidity of utilizing this shopping guide. It might take some trial an error over the next few weeks, so feedback is greatly appreciated.

Instead of listing just a transaction guide I will list each item individually along with the sale associated with the item. Then I will explain how to "roll" the sales on these items with transaction examples listed towards the bottom of the page.

Also, I will designate free or money-maker items to highlight the best deals this week. Additionally, the total at the bottom of the product will indicate the amount you will have to pay for the item NOT considering any Register Rewards or Rebates you will receive after purchase. However, I will include a "It's like paying 'x' for 'x'" to demonstrate the value after the rewards and rebates. For example, if you were to buy the Glucose monitor this week, you'd have to pay $12.99 for it. But then you would eventually get that money back in the form of a rebate, so "It's like paying $0 for 1."

Item names & prices will be black
Coupons will be red
RR or Rebates you receive as result of a transaction will be green and will appear beneath the final price

Why We Love Store Coupons

Store coupons are absolutely amazing. Why? Two reasons: they don't count in your coupon limit and you can double them with manufacturers coupons.

What's this coupon limit?
Most all stores have a coupon limit. Basically, you cannot use more coupons than the number of items you purchase. So, if you buy five items, you can use five coupons. This is really only important when shopping at Walgreens and dealing with Register Rewards. Otherwise, you'll probably never have a problem with coupon limits.

Doubling with Manufacturer's Coupons
Truly, this is the best aspect of store coupons. Usually, you can only use one coupon per item. Thus, if you were to buy toothpaste for $4 & had a $1 off coupon, you could only use one coupon and get the item for $3. However, if you also have a store coupon for $1 off, for the same item, you can use the coupon in conjunction with the manufacturer's coupon and get said product for only $2. You cannot use more than one store coupon for one item though.

How to tell the difference
A manufacturer's coupon will ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS have the words "Manufacturer'S Coupon" printed somewhere on the coupon. Usually it is at the top near the expiration date:
However, be aware that it may not always be in that location. I've sometimes seen it at the bottom of a coupon or on the side somewhere.

Also, don't be deceived by the presence of a store logo on a coupon. There are manufacturer's coupons with store logos on them, such as Publix, Target, and Walgreens. This simply means that the coupon is only redeemable at that specific store (However, other stores may accept it anyway).

A store coupons will almost always say that it is a store coupon. For example, this target coupon:

Remember, you can use one store coupon and one manufacture coupon per item. Telling the different coupons apart should be easy once you know what to look for. ;-)

Printing Coupons Online
There are several sources for online coupons. Check out the following sites where you can print manufacturer's coupons. Remember, you will need a coupon printer installed on your computer if you have not done so already. It's really fast to set up and it will prompt you to do so when you go to print.

SmartSource.com
RedPlum.com
Coupons.com
Coupon Network

Also, you can print store coupons. These are different from manufacturer coupons. Read about why we love store coupons. Here are stores that have online coupons available.

Winn Dixie
Publix
Target

Note that some coupons from the stores website are also manufacturer coupons. You just have to look at the coupon to see what type it is.

Do note that you can specify different zip codes while at these sites. Try some different ones - you may get different coupons depending on the regions.

Manufacturer's Coupons
The Coupon Carry-Out
Clippity-Q

Additionally, there are coupon clippers that auction coupons on eBay. I've not yet used this method, but there are many people that do.

Great Deal on Cat Food at Pet Supermarket!

Pet Supermarket: Great deal on Blue Buffalo Wilderness Cat Food!

The small bag, normally $11 is on sale for $8. There is a $5 off Blue Buffalo coupon floating around out there. I was able to get mine from some coupon clippers. If you can get your hands on some, your cat food would only be $3!

Another scenario would be if you were to get two bags:
(2) Blue Buffalo: $16
Use:
(2) $5 off coupon
(1) Store coupon for $2 off (regularly in the RP inserts)
Total: $4 for 2

Also, if you don't have the blue buffalo coupon from the newspaper inserts, you can get a blue buffalo coupon by taking "The True Blue Test" online. Basically it is a quick comparison of Blue Buffalo food to other food brands. You can get a $5 coupon for dog food and a $3 coupon for cat food just for looking at the comparisons. It is a coupon by mail and may take a few weeks to arrive.

Publix Deals

I just went for a quick shopping trip to Publix. I was only going to get a couple of things to hold me over until I can go to Target. I usually prefer to shop at Target because their prices are usually better, but I was actually quite surprised to find a couple good deals.

It is priced at $3.97 and buy one get one free. So, essentially it is $3.97 for two. Then, in the RP 6/12/11 there was a $2 off coupon. At Publix, during a B1G1 sale you CAN use TWO coupons. Thus, you get $4 off, making both of them free! Be sure to buy other items to cover the negative balance.
(2) Dial: $3.97
(2) $2 off coupon: -$0.03

Ronzoni
This one is B1G1 too! Normally priced at $1.39, it is on sale for buy one get one free. In the 5/15/11 SS there is a $1/1 coupon. This one is actually a money maker for you! Be sure to buy other items because your total can't go into the negatives.
(2) Ronzoni: 1.39
(2) $1 off coupon: -$0.61

Sargento Cheese is 2/$4. It's especially great if you can get your hands on two coupons. Click here to print coupons for Sargento Cheese
Do note that the coupons are type specific. For example: only good for Pepper Jack or Extra Sharp Cheddar.
With coupons you can get 2 for only $2!

Easier Ways to Reach Rewards at CVS

"Spend $30 dollars on these items and get $10 gas card!"
That was an ad in this week's CVS ad flier. I'm also sure that at some point you've seen something similar such as "spend $20 get $5 off," especially if you scan your CVS card at the front of the store. But when you're couponing and spending only $1-$5 per transaction, how do you reach the $20 minimum to get your $5 off?

The secret, as told to me by a very savings savvy cashier is that if you buy items on sale, don't scan your CVS card untill the END of the transaction. Let's run through a hypothetical situation to exemplify this idea:

Colgate toothpaste, normally priced at $5 is on sale for $2. You have a coupon for $5 off $15 purchase. You buy three toothpastes:

1) If you scan your card at the beginning of the purchase, when the cashier rings up the toothpaste, each will ring up for $2. Thus, your subtotal will be $6 and you will not be able to use your $5 off coupon.
-BUT-
2) If on the other hand, you ring up all your items first, they will ring up for $5. Hence, a $15 subtotal. Then, you can scan your card and use your $5 off coupon. The coupon will reduce the price and then the price of the toothpastes will adjust. Your total will now be $1.

This scenario can apply to any similar coupon or sale promotion where a minimum value must be achieved. So from now on, be sure that you have the cashier scan the coupon at the end of your purchase.

Happy Savings,
Jenn

At the following link, you can request to have a coupon for free wipes sent to you. It only took a couple of weeks before it came in the mail. I ended up buying the wipes at Target because I found it was too expensive at Walgreens & CVS (the coupon has a maximum value).

Beneath that, I've created a list of all the coupons you will need for the list and then a shopping list. Also, be sure to check my notes at the bottom about the item limits. Couponing 101: Coupons from the Sunday Paper

Intro
I recently took a giant leap into the highly intricate world of couponing.  At first I was completely lost, and I had no idea what I was getting myself into.  But soon, I learned and figured things out for myself.  However, I made some mistakes along the way (how else would I have learned).  The purpose for creating this blog is to help beginners and make couponing much simpler and less time consuming.

I've also created this blog specific to South Florida.  Now, that does not mean you cannot utilize it if you live elsewhere.  Simply, I live in S. Florida and found most couponing sites and blogs were not tailored to S. Florida stores and prices.  The prices in South Florida are higher; more than once I've found myself looking for an item that I was told would be free (from friends in the Midwest), only to find out that it is $2 or $3 here which makes a world of difference when couponing and buying in bulk.

Getting Started
The most important thing to couponing is getting coupons!  There are three main sources: the Sunday paper, online coupons, and clipping services.

First, let's discuss the coupons that come in the Sunday paper.  Personally, I do not buy a Sunday paper.  But I still get a free copy of SunSentinel's "Deals Delivered" with coupons every Sunday morning.  If you already get the paper because you like to read it, that is one thing.  But you don't have to buy it if all you want is the coupons.  What I do, and what I suggest for everyone else is to ask around for the coupon inserts.  Ask your neighbors, friends and family if you can have their coupon inserts if they don't use them (most inserts end up in the trash!).  I try to get 4-5 copies of the coupons each weekend.  This way when there is a really good deal going on, you have 5 coupons and can buy 5 of the items!

Now if you cannot find anyone to give you their coupon inserts, then I do suggest you buy the Sunday paper.  In the end spending $7.50 for 5 papers is still more than worth it.  On the other hand, there is always dumpster diving, but personally I'd prefer to spend the few bucks and stay clean.

There are two regular inserts that you will see.  One is called SmartSource and the other Red Plum.  SmartSource comes almost every week (not on holiday weekends though).  Red Plum comes on a less regular schedule, but you will still see them a couple times a month or so.  Also, once in a while (about once every 4-5 weeks) there will be a Proctor and Gamble insert.  Occasionally, you may see two Red Plum or SmartSource inserts.  It is important to know the difference because often times people (like myself) will reference a coupon by telling you about a great deal on mouthwash in the "Red Plum 5/22."  Also note, often the names will be abbreviated as RP (Red Plum), SS (Smart Source) and P&G (Proctor and Gamble).

So now that you have your inserts, what do you do with them?  Take a big sharpie and on the front of the insert (be sure not to obscure a coupon!), write the date of the paper in which it came.  So, for the inserts that came in the May 22 paper, I have a big "5/22" written across my inserts.  This will help you quickly find the correct insert while looking for your coupons.

Then, get some sheet protectors.  Put all the SmartSource inserts for the day in one protector and all the Red Plum inserts in another protector.  Then put the protectors in a 3 ring binder.  This will effectively begin your coupon binder!  Each week add your new inserts and be sure to keep them in chronological order to make it easier to search through your book.

Why do that?  Shouldn't I just cut all the coupons out?  NO!  That is precisely what I thought when I began.  There I was, sitting for hours going through all the coupons, cutting them out and organizing them.  It is a waste of time.  Plus, it is really easy to loose coupons when you have hundreds of tiny pieces of paper lying around.  The key is only cutting the coupon out right before you're going to use it.  This way you only cut out what you know you are going to use, thus saving you a lot of time.

Also, I like to keep a coupon inventory in the front of my binder, so I can easily look down the list and know what coupons are in each insert.  I will post each week's inventory so you guys can use it for reference if you wish.

This is the first step to saving thousands of dollars with the world of coupons.  It only takes 5-10 minutes to get the inserts, write the date on it, and place it in your binder.

Stay tuned... next time I will be posting about the online coupons and clipping services.
